Volunteer Application

Thank you for your desire to serve by volunteering with Charlottesville Abundant Life Ministries (Abundant Life). We rejoice that the Lord has stimulated within you a commitment to co-labor with us in the Prospect Avenue area of Fifeville.  Our work could not advance without servants like you!  Serving the Lord by volunteering with Abundant Life is a privilege which we hope will be a blessing to you.

In order for us to care for and protect both our volunteers and the families we serve, we need you to complete a few forms.  They are designed to guard the life, safety and health of our families, our volunteers, and our ministry.  These forms include:

Please read and pray over the National Association of Evangelicals' statement of faith. This statement affirms the core Christian convictions undergirding Abundant Life's ministry.  When you volunteer, you represent Abundant Life to the youth and families we serve and our desire is to represent Jesus Christ.  Therefore, if you indicate on the form that you agree with the statement of Faith, you are affirming that you believe these important principles and that you endeavor to live by them. If you are unable to agree with the Statement of Faith, but are able to support the basic principles of the Christian faith (honoring God,  respecting one another, living faithfully and Biblically), then you may still serve in a variety of capacities including our very important and popular tutoring programs.

Additionally, please remember that your actions and words are a significant part of your witness/example for others.  Therefore, we do expect high moral standards from our volunteers.  Using inappropriate language (i.e. swearing or other disrespectful talk around the children or their families) or living a lifestyle that is not consistent with Biblical standards (i.e. abusing drugs or alcohol, living with a sexual partner out of marriage, etc.) are major red flags.  While all people struggle with various temptations and inappropriate behaviors (sins) the Bible encourages those in leadership to be “. . . not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain.  Rather . . . be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.” (Titus 1: 7b-8a).

Occasionally, a volunteer’s assignment may turn out not to be a good fit with his/her personality, skills, or abilities; in such a case, we may ask the volunteer to step down from the position or to switch to a different one.

Our desire is that your service through Abundant Life would edify you and the lives you will touch through the ministry. Please fill out our Volunteer Application in full. It helps us to get to know you better, and we hope, helps you to reflect on your abilities and life experiences and how you can employ these in serving with Abundant Life.  It is particularly important that you complete the references section, including phone numbers and addresses; we have a duty to check references so we can protect the children and families we serve.

Some volunteers will be required to complete a Criminal Background Check. These volunteers must sign the form in the presence of a Notary Public (to whom they show their picture ID) and return the form to Abundant Life.  Notaries are available at most local banks and at UVA’s Newcomb Hall; some charge a small fee, less than $5. You will be notified by Abundant Life if this is necessary.

Abundant Life carries liability insurance to protect our volunteers when they are engaged in sponsored and supervised activities.  Please read carefully the discussion regarding the difference between official, sponsored activities and unofficial, unsponsored activities and then sign the Volunteer Waiver Statement.  It is very important that you -- and the families whom we serve -- understand the difference between these kinds of activities.  Parents of our youth are asked to sign a similar
